Chapter 5 — The Doctor Saw My Absent Boyfriend’s Face in My Newborn

Dr.

Wright lifted his head.

“And Ethan?”

“What?”

“Running because you’re frightened doesn’t make the fear disappear.

It just hands it to somebody else.”

The call ended a few minutes later.

Nothing was repaired.

That mattered.

There was no dramatic reunion, no magical apology that erased the room above the hardware store, the double shifts, the nights I cried into my pillow, or the empty chair beside me during labor.

But the silence had finally been broken.

Over the next two days, Dr.

Wright visited only when I allowed it.

The first time, he brought coffee and left it untouched when he remembered I was nursing and wasn’t sure what I wanted.

The second time, he stood several feet from the bassinet and asked, “May I?”

He meant hold the baby.

I watched him for a long moment before answering.

“Sit down first.”

He did.

When I placed my son in his arms, the respected physician who supposedly never lost his composure cried again.

Quietly this time.

“Hello,” he whispered.

“I’m Michael.”

He did not call himself Grandpa.

I noticed that.

He was waiting for permission even for the title.

That small restraint earned more trust from me than any grand promise could have.

Ethan arrived the following afternoon.

I knew he was outside before I saw him because Dr.

Wright came into my room alone.

“He’s here,” he said.

My heart started pounding.

“Did you bring him in?”

“No.

He’s sitting in the hallway.

I told him that was your decision.”

I looked toward the closed door.

For a moment I was twenty-nine weeks pregnant again, watching Ethan zip a bag while refusing to meet my eyes.

Then my son stirred beside me.

I touched his tiny hand.

This wasn’t about chasing Ethan anymore.

It was about deciding what kind of life surrounded my child.

“Let him come in.”

Ethan entered slowly.

He looked thinner than I remembered.

His hair was longer.

The confidence he once carried so easily was gone.

His eyes found the bassinet.

He stopped breathing for a second.

Then he looked at me.

“Emily.”

I said nothing.

He took one step forward.

“Can I see him?”

“From there.”

He obeyed.
