The money everyone believed she had stolen.
Whoever planted it expected the police to find it.
But Lena had recently installed a small camera outside her apartment after threats began appearing on her door.
The camera recorded a man wearing a delivery jacket carrying the bag inside.
Twenty minutes later, it recorded Victor leaving through the service stairwell.
Claire had denied knowing anything.
Lena played a second recording.
Victor’s voice came through clearly.
“Once the cash is found in her apartment, the case is finished.”
Claire’s voice followed.
“And if she finds it first?”
“Then we make sure she never reaches compliance.”
Claire had gone pale in the garage.
She remembered the conversation.
She had not known Lena was standing on the other side of the maintenance door.
“I was scared,” Claire told her.
“So was I.”
“He threatened my job.”
“You threatened my freedom.”
Claire began to cry.
Lena did not comfort her.
She simply asked, “Will you tell the truth?”
Claire said she needed time.
Lena gave her until Monday morning.
Monday morning was the day a car struck Lena outside her apartment building.
The sound of the bank’s internal lock releasing pulled Claire back to the counter.
A door beside the vault opened.
A tall man in a charcoal suit entered the lobby carrying a sealed evidence case.
Two uniformed officers followed him.
Victor’s expression collapsed.
The man was Daniel Price, regional head of compliance.
He looked first at Noah, then at the bag, then at the key on the counter.
“Which of you is Claire Rowan?”
Claire raised a trembling hand.
Daniel placed a document on the counter.
“We received a scheduled evidence release from Lena Mercer at nine this morning.
This branch is now under formal investigation.”
Victor recovered enough to speak.
“This is absurd.
That woman is a disgruntled former employee facing theft charges.”
Daniel looked at him calmly.
“Those charges were suspended at eight forty-two.”
Victor said nothing.
Daniel continued.
“Ms.
Mercer provided serial records proving the money was processed through this branch months after her access was revoked.
She also provided video of the bag being placed in her apartment.”
Claire stared at Noah.
“Where is your mother?” she asked.
“At the hospital.”
His voice wavered for the first time.
“She told the ambulance lady I had to bring the bag here.”
Daniel crouched so his eyes were level with Noah’s.
“You did exactly the right thing.
Your mother is awake.
A police officer is with her.”
