Norah heard the bitterness beneath the words.
It was not regret.
It was self-pity sharpened into permission.
“So Salvatore paid you,” Killian said.
Kieran smiled faintly.
“Salvatore understood the value of the man holding the keys.”
“And the Russians?”
“A distraction.
They were never expecting you at the docks.”
The phone on Killian’s desk rang.
One of his men answered and quietly confirmed that the scheduled Russian meeting had been moved the previous night.
The notice had gone only to Kieran’s transport account.
Kieran had hidden it so Killian would believe he was late and rush toward the waiting vehicle.
Every detail had been designed to narrow his choices.
The shipment threat Killian had made that morning had given Kieran one more advantage.
Everyone in the house expected violence from outside.
No one would immediately suspect the man opening the car door.
No one except Norah.
Killian turned toward her.
“How did you know where he normally carried his weapon?”
She glanced at Kieran.
“He brushes his jacket against the hall table every morning.
The left side makes contact first because of the holster.
Today it didn’t.”
“And the signal?”
“He never looks at the roof.
Drivers watch doors, gates, mirrors, and roads.
Today he checked the chimney twice.”
Killian studied her with the same attention he usually reserved for threats.
“You noticed all that while fixing my tie?”
“I noticed it before I touched your tie.
The mirror made it clear.”
Kieran laughed bitterly.
“This is what brings me down? A servant staring into a mirror?”
Norah faced him.
“No.
You brought yourself down when you assumed no one below you could see.”
The words struck harder than a shout.
Kieran surged out of the chair.
His hands were secured, but he drove his shoulder toward Norah.
A guard caught him before he reached her and forced him back.
The sudden movement knocked the red folder from the desk.
Papers scattered across the carpet.
One page landed at Norah’s feet.
It was an access list for the estate roof.
Kieran’s authorization code appeared beside a maintenance entry created two days earlier.
Killian bent, picked up the page, and placed it in front of him.
The last of Kieran’s defiance disappeared.
By noon, the evidence had been copied and secured: the suppressed pistol, the rifle, the burner phone, the route changes, the roof-access record, and the courtyard footage showing that only Kieran had entered the SUV that morning.
Killian’s attorney delivered the material to detectives as evidence of an attempted murder conspiracy.
Kieran and the captured shooter were removed from the estate in separate vehicles.
Neither was allowed to speak to the other.
The messages on the burner phone led investigators to the warehouse funded through Kieran’s transport accounts.
Salvatore’s shipment never reached the docks.
Trucks, cash, and weapons were seized before sunset.
The Russians postponed every meeting connected to the O’Malley organization until the full breach could be contained.
