Chapter 2 — Walter Gave Me a Key to the Secret Daniel Buried for Four Years

4.9Editorial score

Ungrateful.

That was the word she had used.

At the time I thought she meant I had abandoned her son.

Now I realized she had been told something much uglier.

I read every letter.

In one, Walter apologized for not challenging Daniel sooner.

In another, he wrote that Daniel had become furious when Walter asked to see old bank statements.

Then came the letter that made me stand up and walk around the tiny room because sitting still became impossible.

Daniel knows I copied the records.

He says I am confused and that I should stay out of his marriage.

Maybe I should have spoken sooner.

If he tells you I agree with him, don’t believe it.

The final envelope contained no letter.

It held a small digital recorder.

For several seconds I simply stared at it.

Then I pressed the button.

Static filled the room.

Walter’s voice came first, stronger than the voice I knew at Maple Grove.

“I want you to tell me where Claire’s money went.”

Daniel answered.

My entire body went cold.

“It’s handled.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

“Dad, she’s leaving me.

She doesn’t get to tear apart my life and walk away with everything.”

A chair moved somewhere in the recording.

Walter said, “If it belongs to both of you, you don’t get to hide it because you’re angry.”

Daniel’s voice sharpened.

“Stay out of it.”

“Did Claire authorize those transfers?”

There was a long silence.

Then Daniel said, “She’ll get what I decide is fair.”

The recording ended moments later.

I replayed that sentence three times.

Not because I needed to hear it again.

Because part of me still couldn’t accept how casually he had said it.

For years, I had carried the shame of that divorce like a private stain.

Daniel had been so certain, so relentless, that sometimes I had wondered whether I really had exaggerated everything.

Maybe the late nights had innocent explanations.

Maybe the money problems truly were complicated.

Maybe I had failed because I wasn’t patient enough.

The papers on that table did not erase the marriage.

They erased the version of it Daniel had forced me to carry afterward.

There was one more folded sheet beneath the recorder.

Walter had written it by hand.

If Claire ever opens this box, it means I was unable to fix this myself.

Daniel has been telling people I am forgetful whenever I question him.

Maybe one day that will be true.

It is not true today.

Below that sentence, Walter had listed dates.

Bank appointments.

Arguments with Daniel.

Calls he had attempted to make to me.

And, more recently, transfers involving Walter’s own accounts.

I read those entries twice.

The story had not ended with my divorce.
