The doctor’s hand remained frozen over the phone.

Daniel sat beside me, trembling, his eyes fixed on the floor.

“Dad told me never to tell you.”

For several seconds, nobody moved.

I crouched in front of my son and took both of his hands.

“Daniel, look at me.”

He did, reluctantly.

“You’re not in trouble.

I need you to tell the doctor what happened.”

The doctor lowered himself into the chair across from us.

His voice changed.

It became slow and careful.

“Daniel, do you remember swallowing anything?”

Daniel’s face crumpled.

He nodded.

My heart started pounding.

“What did you swallow?”

“The little silver balls from Dad’s desk.”

The doctor looked immediately at the X-ray again.

Two bright circular objects sat frighteningly close together.

“Magnets?” he asked.

Daniel nodded.

I stared at him.

“When?”

His answer was barely audible.

“A few weeks ago.”

The room seemed to tilt.

A few weeks.

The stomach aches had started a few weeks ago.

The nausea.

The exhaustion.

The nights doubled over in bed.

Carlos calling him dramatic.

Carlos telling me not to waste money.

I squeezed Daniel’s hands.

“How did it happen?”

He swallowed hard.

He explained that one Saturday morning, while I was buying groceries, he had gone into the small room Carlos used as an office.

Carlos kept a magnetic desk toy near his computer, a cluster of shiny metal beads Daniel had always been fascinated by.

Carlos was in the room with him.

Daniel had separated two of the beads and was rolling them between his fingers.

He put one near his lips while trying to pull the other away.

Somehow, in the awkward movement, he swallowed them.

He panicked immediately.

So did Carlos.

But not for the reason I would have expected.

“Dad got really mad,” Daniel whispered.

“What did he say?”

Daniel hesitated.

“He said you couldn’t find out because you’d make it a huge thing.”

I felt something cold spread through my chest.

“Did you tell him you swallowed both?”

“Yes.”

“He knew?”

Daniel nodded.

The doctor looked at me, and I understood why his first questions had been so careful.
