Chapter 7 — My Husband Said Our Son Was Faking—Then the Scan Exposed What He Knew

4.9Editorial score

At the clinic, all of that certainty collapsed in front of one ultrasound image.

Months later, I found the old cardboard castle Daniel had built before he got sick.

It had been pushed beneath his bed, one side crushed.

I carried it into the living room.

“Think this can be repaired?”

Daniel inspected it seriously.

“Maybe.”

He disappeared into his room and returned with tape, markers, and scissors.

We spent the afternoon rebuilding it.

He added towers that hadn’t existed before.

He reinforced the walls.

At one point he looked up at me and smiled.

“It’s stronger now.”

I looked at the crooked cardboard castle between us.

“Yeah,” I said.

“I think it is.”

The ultrasound had shown two tiny objects inside my son’s body.

But what it really exposed was something I had been refusing to see inside my own home.

Daniel had not needed someone to tell him he was tough enough to endure the pain.

He had needed someone to believe him.

And the day I finally stopped asking Carlos for permission to trust what I could see was the day my son started getting his voice back—and I started getting mine back too.
