Chapter 6 — A Mechanic Saw What Arya’s Million-Dollar Doctors Had Missed

4.9Editorial score

She moved her left foot.

Then her right.

Not gracefully.

Not quickly.

But without the second crutch.

Rowan did not clap.

He simply moved the rag another six inches.

Months passed.

Arya’s progress became measurable enough that even Celeste stopped treating it like something that might disappear if she looked at it too closely.

Her medical team adjusted her rehabilitation around the function she was regaining.

Some nerve deficits remained.

Her left leg tired rapidly.

Pain still visited without permission.

No one promised she would return to the body she had before the crash.

Rowan never promised it either.

That became his greatest gift to her.

He stopped making the past the price of progress.

Eight months after the day at the workshop, Arya stood in the rehabilitation room with her brace fitted and no crutches in her hands.

A safety rail ran beside her.

Her physician stood near one end.

Celeste stood near the other, both hands pressed against her mouth.

Rowan leaned against the wall.

Arya looked at him.

“Don’t say anything.”

“Wasn’t going to.”

“You were thinking something.”

“Usually am.”

She almost smiled.

Then she looked at the floor.

The old fear arrived.

It still knew the way.

Her shoulders began to rise.

Her right hand curled even though there was no crutch to squeeze.

Rowan saw it.

He said one word.

“One.”

Not one step.

One movement.

Arya let her shoulders fall.

She shifted her weight.

Her left foot moved forward.

The brace supported what her damaged leg could not fully control.

Her muscles trembled.

Her physician stayed close but did not touch her.

Arya brought her right foot through.

Celeste made a sound that was half laugh, half sob.

Arya stopped.

For two years, stopping had meant failure.

Now it meant she had chosen where to stop.

She took another step.

Then another.

Four steps in total.

No crutches.

No robotic exoskeleton.

No one holding her upright.

When Arya finally reached the rail, she gripped it and began to cry.
