“Medicine cannot certify miracles.”
Sarah slid the draft trust documents across the table.
Three names appeared beneath language describing biological descendants of Julian Vance.
The transfers had not yet been completed, but the instructions were dated the morning before Luke’s celebration.
Eleanor stared at the pages as though they had become contaminated.
I looked at Julian.
“You knew before your mother put that baby in my arms.”
He did not deny it.
That silence hurt more than the diagnosis.
For years, I had wondered whether some part of him believed the family’s cruelty was excessive.
Whether he looked away because he was weak, embarrassed or trapped between me and the children.
Now I understood.
He had learned that the entire story might be false, then stood beneath the chandelier and watched his mother announce my failure to a room full of guests.
He had protected himself for one more evening by sacrificing me again.
Khloe rose suddenly.
“This proves nothing about the boys.”
Everyone turned toward her.
She held Luke close, rocking him even though he had not begun to cry.
“Doctors make mistakes,” she continued.
“Tests get contaminated.
Julian and I know what happened.”
“Then you will welcome paternity testing,” Sarah said.
Khloe’s eyes flashed.
“You cannot order tests on my children.”
“The court can,” Sarah replied.
“Especially when millions in trust assets are being transferred based on a biological claim.”
Eleanor rounded on me.
“You filed against infants?”
“I froze a transfer,” I said.
“You were about to move marital and family assets while publicly declaring those children Julian’s biological heirs.
Verification protects everyone—including them.”
“You hate them.”
“No.
I’m the only person in this room who has not used them as weapons.”
Luke stirred against Khloe’s shoulder.
I lowered my voice.
“The boys are innocent.
But innocence does not turn a lie into blood.”
Julian crushed the torn papers in his fist.
“Enough.
I will take the test.”
Khloe looked at him.
“Julian, don’t do this here.”
The words changed the room.
Not don’t let them insult us.
Not the result will prove them wrong.
Don’t do this here.
Eleanor heard it too.
Her face hardened.
“Why would location matter?”
Khloe opened her mouth, but nothing came out.
Dr.
Harrison closed the medical report.
“Wellington can arrange legally supervised collections.
Chain of custody will be documented.
Results can be expedited, but they will not be immediate.”
