“Who authorized these transfers?”
My father’s question landed more heavily than a shout.
The bank manager looked at Henry Whitmore, then at me, as if some equation she had been struggling with had suddenly solved itself.
Until that second, I had been Mrs.
Vale, a pregnant woman with screenshots and a marital dispute.
Now she understood why Henry Whitmore had walked through the door and stopped beside my chair.
She also understood something Preston had never bothered to learn.
I was his daughter.
“Mr.
Whitmore,” she said, standing too quickly.
“I didn’t realize—”
“That isn’t what I asked.”
His voice was calm.
That was how my father sounded when someone had exactly one opportunity to tell him the truth.
The manager sat again.
“The transfers were initiated using credentials connected to Mrs.
Vale’s online banking profile.”
I slid my phone across the desk.
“I didn’t initiate them.”
She studied the timestamps.
7:58.
8:03.
8:11.
8:16.
Four accounts reduced to zero in eighteen minutes.
Then she looked at the destination information.
Vale Development Operating LLC.
L.
Hart Boutique Consulting.
My father read both names without expression.
“Preston is her husband?” he asked.
“Yes,” I said.
It was the first time I had ever confirmed my marriage to him in person.
His eyes moved to my wedding ring.
He didn’t ask why I had hidden it.
Not then.
“And L.
Hart?”
“His mistress.”
The manager lowered her eyes.
My father didn’t.
Something shifted in his face, small enough that anyone who didn’t know him would have missed it.
I knew him.
He was furious.
“Can the outgoing funds be held?” he asked.
The manager chose her next words carefully.
“We can immediately flag the transactions for fraud review and contact the receiving institutions.
Whether funds can be recovered depends on their status and authorization history.”
“Then do that,” I said.
Henry looked at me.
Not at the manager.
At me.
He gave one short nod.
For the first time that morning, somebody in the room was following my decision instead of making one for me.
The manager began typing.
I opened my folder.
