Then at me.

Then back at Henry.

“This is insane.”

“No,” I said.

“What’s insane is stealing from your unborn daughter before breakfast and thinking your biggest problem would be me getting emotional.”

“I didn’t steal anything.”

I held up the folder.

“Then you’ll enjoy explaining the transfers.”

He stepped closer.

“Grace, can we talk privately?”

“We had privacy.

You used it.”

His jaw tightened.

He looked at Henry again.

“I don’t know what she’s told you, but this is a marital financial issue.”

“Then discuss it with your wife,” Henry said.

Preston seemed confused by the answer.

He had expected Henry to dominate the room.

Instead, my father moved to the side.

Beside me.

Exactly where I had asked him to be.

Preston turned back to me.

“The development company had a cash gap.

I was protecting an investment.”

“With every dollar I had?”

I opened my phone and showed him the saved image.

Then I opened the photograph of the receipt from his jacket.

Then another photograph I had taken weeks earlier of charges I hadn’t recognized.

His face changed with each swipe.

I hadn’t confronted him two months earlier because I had wanted certainty.

He had mistaken my silence for ignorance.

“You were collecting things?” he asked.

“I was paying attention.”

He stared at me as though this version of his wife had been hiding behind the old one.

Maybe she had.

“So this was a trap?”

“No, Preston.

A trap requires bait.

You did all of this yourself.”

His phone rang.

He checked it and went pale.

He stepped away to answer.

I heard fragments.

“Temporary review.”

“No, the funds are there.”

“I said I’ll handle it.”

Then his voice sharpened.

“Don’t pull anything until I call you back.”

He ended the call.

For the first time all morning, he looked frightened.
