Then pleased.

Claire did not move back into the house for months.

Grant never asked her to.

When she finally brought one suitcase through the front door, she stopped in the foyer and made the terms clear.

“This isn’t the old marriage restarting.”

“I know.”

“If I feel invisible again, I leave again.”

“I know.”

“And I am not putting the ring back on because you behaved well for a few months.”

Grant looked at her bare hand.

“I know.”

Claire studied him.

“You say that differently now.”

“I used to say it because I wanted the conversation to end.”

“And now?”

“Now I say it because I’m listening.”

She did not smile immediately.

But eventually, she did.

Their child arrived months later after a long night at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Grant stayed beside Claire without opening his laptop, checking financial markets, answering board messages, or asking Daniel for updates.

At one point his phone vibrated repeatedly inside his coat pocket.

Claire heard it.

Their eyes met.

Grant removed the phone, switched it off without checking the screen, and placed it facedown inside a drawer.

Claire reached for his hand.

It was the first time since the gala she had done so without hesitation.

Later, when the room had quieted and their baby slept nearby, Grant looked at Claire and began to speak.

She lifted one tired finger.

“Don’t make a speech.”

He almost laughed.

The man who once believed every important moment required polished words simply nodded.

“Okay.”

Weeks after they returned home, Claire found the old wedding ring in a small box inside Grant’s desk.

He had never hidden it.

He had simply kept it safe and never offered it back.

Claire carried the box into the kitchen.

Grant was preparing coffee.

She placed it on the counter.

His face changed when he saw it.

“Claire—”

“I’m not asking for another proposal.”

He stopped.

She opened the box and looked at the ring that had once felt like evidence of a promise only she was keeping.

“Do you know why I left this?”

“Because wearing it had started to feel dishonest.”

Claire nodded.

“And do you know why I’m taking it now?”

Grant’s throat moved.

He did not guess.

He did not rush to turn the moment into forgiveness.

“Tell me.”

Claire picked up the ring.

“Because this time, I am choosing what it means.”

She slid it onto her own finger.

Grant’s eyes filled, but he stayed where he was.

Claire crossed the space between them and rested her forehead against his chest.
