Chapter 2 — He Left Olivia for a Model—Then Her Pregnancy Made Him Drop His Glass

4.9Editorial score

The same month in which he had told friends that the marriage had been emotionally finished long before the paperwork.

The same month in which photographs of Khloe began appearing beside him.

His voice dropped.

“You were pregnant when you left?”

“When you made me leave,” Olivia corrected.

“Neither of us knew.”

The distinction hit him.

“When did you find out?”

“After.”

“And you didn’t tell me?”

Olivia looked at him for several seconds.

There it was.

Not grief first.

Not concern.

Offense.

He had discarded her, but he was furious that she had experienced something important outside his control.

“I found out while I was learning how to live somewhere else,” she said.

“While your lawyers were sending me documents.

While photographs of you and Khloe were being published every morning.

I needed time to understand what was happening before I let you turn it into another announcement.”

“That’s my child.”

“Children.”

Liam’s face emptied.

Olivia reached into the folder and removed a small medical image tucked behind the legal pages.

She did not hand it to him immediately.

“Twins.”

The word seemed to leave the air too slowly.

Khloe took a step backward.

Liam stared at the image in Olivia’s hand.

“Twins?”

“Yes.”

For the first time since Olivia entered the ballroom, something beneath Liam’s polished public face cracked completely.

He sat down on the edge of a narrow upholstered bench without seeming to realize he was doing it.

His gaze remained fixed on the image.

Olivia remembered another version of him then.

A younger Liam on the floor of their Queens apartment, surrounded by takeout cartons and prototype boxes, telling her that someday they would have enough space for children to run through the hallway.

Back then, neither of them had imagined private elevators or gala invitations.

They had imagined stability.

A decent kitchen.

A family.

For one dangerous second, Olivia felt grief rise through her chest.

Then Liam looked up and ruined the memory himself.

“Why tonight?” he demanded.

Olivia almost laughed.

He was still trying to find the strategy.

The trap.

The hidden public-relations calculation.

“Because these papers needed to be delivered,” she said.

“And because I was invited to the gala.

I didn’t arrange your reaction.”

“You walked into that room pregnant.”

“I generally bring the pregnancy with me now.”

A sound escaped someone near the doorway.

It might have been a laugh quickly swallowed.

Liam’s eyes snapped toward the witnesses.

Then he stood.
