Chapter 3 — He Slapped His Wife—Then the Ballroom Doors Opened

4.9Editorial score

“I saw your name.”

“Did you see me sign it?”

“No.”

Barbara pushed through the crowd and planted herself beside her son.

“Enough,” she snapped.

“This family matter is being distorted by a spiteful woman and her controlling father.

Samantha has always resented Luke’s success.

She could never give him children, so now she wants to take away his company.”

The sentence landed exactly as she intended.

For years, the word barren had been the knife Barbara used whenever I disagreed with her.

She had announced my supposed diagnosis at Thanksgiving.

She had told Luke that staying married to me was a sacrifice.

She had even brought brochures for surrogacy agencies to my birthday dinner.

I unlocked my phone.

“Would you like to explain the fertility report?” I asked.

For the first time, Barbara looked frightened.

I opened an audio file recovered from the home security account.

The phone speaker crackled.

Barbara’s recorded voice filled the ballroom.

“Change the result page.

She never reads the clinical codes.

Make it look final.

Luke needs to understand she is the problem, not him.”

Another voice—faint, nervous—asked about payment.

Barbara replied with an amount and promised cash.

I stopped the recording.

No one moved.

Luke stared at his mother.

“You altered it?”

Barbara’s mouth opened and closed.

“It was for your own good,” she said at last.

“You were wasting your best years on her.”

“You told me she couldn’t have children.”

“You needed freedom.”

The cruelty of it should have broken me.

Instead, it clarified the last three years.

Luke had chosen to believe the report because it gave him permission to resent me.

Barbara had forged the weapon, but he had enjoyed using it.

He faced me with something almost like hope.

“Samantha, I didn’t know.

My mother lied to me.

Chloe manipulated the paperwork.

We can fix this.”

“You hit me three times.”

“I was angry.”

“You brought your mistress to our anniversary gala.”

“She pressured me.”

Chloe laughed bitterly.

“I pressured you? You promised to announce our engagement after the divorce.”

Luke’s face twisted.

“You are a liar.”

“I have messages.”

“Delete them.”

The words escaped him before he could stop them.

Several reporters recorded every syllable.

Arthur’s phone vibrated.
