Chapter 6 — He Took His Mother Shopping While His Wife Was in Labor With Twins

4.9Editorial score

Paperwork did not care how loud she spoke.

Neither did timestamps.

Neither did the people whose job was to look at what actually happened.

Eventually, Blake stopped trying to convince me the afternoon had been a misunderstanding.

He admitted the truth in simpler words.

He had wanted to avoid disappointing his mother.

So he disappointed his wife at the worst possible moment instead.

Our marriage did not survive that choice.

By the time the legal separation became permanent, I no longer thought of the day primarily as the day Blake left me.

I thought of it as the day I stopped confusing promises with character.

Character was not Blake practicing the drive to Mercy General at midnight.

Character was what he did when I actually needed the ride.

Months later, I returned to the house to collect the last of my things.

The damaged door had been repaired.

The police tape was long gone.

The kitchen smelled different because nobody had used Diane’s preferred lemon cleaner in weeks.

I found Blake’s old hospital checklist inside a drawer.

Call Labor and Delivery.

Load blue folder.

Do not panic.

Do not delay.

For a moment I simply held it.

Then I placed it on the counter beside the blue folder that had helped prove exactly what my doctors had instructed me to do.

Two pieces of paper.

One showed what Blake had promised.

The other showed what my babies and I had actually needed.

I took the blue folder.

I left his checklist behind.

Outside, the twins were waiting safely for me.

I locked the door, walked to the car, and did not look back.
