Chapter 4 — He Yanked My Daughter’s Hair—Then His Mother Applauded

4.9Editorial score

Something changed in Emily’s face.

It was not confidence.

Not yet.

It was recognition.

For years, Diane had disguised threats as advice and cruelty as concern.

Now, in front of police officers and strangers, she had finally said the quiet part plainly.

Emily wiped her cheeks.

“I’m not crawling anywhere,” she said.

The officer returned to Brent.

After reviewing the video and speaking with the witnesses, the officers placed him under arrest on suspicion of assault.

When the handcuffs closed, Brent stopped pretending to be gentle.

He twisted toward Emily.

“This is your fault!”

The entire restaurant heard him.

“You let your mother destroy our marriage!”

Emily did not answer.

Diane followed as the officers led him toward the door.

“You will regret this, Linda,” she told me.

I looked at my daughter.

“No,” I said.

“I regret how long she was afraid to tell me.”

After Brent was taken away, the restaurant manager brought Emily a fresh glass of water.

His hand shook slightly as he set it down.

“Your meal is taken care of,” he said.

“And the security video will be available to the police.

It will not be erased.”

The young waiter stood several feet behind him.

Emily looked at both men.

“Thank you for not looking away.”

The waiter swallowed.

“My sister was with someone like that,” he said.

“People looked away.”

No one added anything after that.

I drove Emily to my house.

She sat with her forehead against the passenger window, wrapped in the coat I had placed around her shoulders.

Halfway there, she asked, “Are you angry with me?”

I gripped the steering wheel.

“I am angry that he hurt you.”

“I should have told you sooner.”

“You told me when you could.”

“You warned me about him.”

“This is not a contest I wanted to win.”

She turned away and cried silently until we reached home.

That night she slept in her childhood bedroom.

I sat in the hallway outside with my phone in my lap, listening to every creak of the house.

Brent called eleven times after he was released with conditions barring him from contacting her directly.

When his calls went unanswered, Diane began calling instead.

Emily did not pick up.

The messages shifted quickly.

First Brent apologized.

He said he had been stressed.

He said the wine had affected him.

He said Diane’s applause had embarrassed him too.

Then he blamed Emily for provoking him.

Then he warned that she would lose the apartment, their savings, and every friend they shared.

We saved every message.
