Chapter 6 — Her Surgeon Husband Thought the Hospital Would Hide What He Did

4.9Editorial score

A full night’s sleep.

Months later, I went with Olivia to another appointment.

The room was smaller than the VIP suite at St.

Victoria.

The floor was plain tile.

There were no marble counters, no lavender diffuser, and no photographs of famous doctors on the walls.

Olivia changed into a gown without asking me to turn away.

The bruises were gone.

She caught me looking at the clear skin across her shoulders.

For one terrible second, I remembered the boot prints.

Then my grandson laughed from his stroller.

Olivia smiled and lifted him into her arms.

“We’re okay,” she said.

I looked at my daughter—the woman Nathan had tried to frighten into silence—and understood that dignity had not been restored by his arrest, his ruined reputation, or the loss of his hospital.

It had returned the first time Olivia said, “I didn’t fall,” while he was still standing in the room.

Everything after that was consequence.
