“Including the filing?”
I looked at the empty signature line.
Seven years reduced to a place for ink.
“Including the filing.”
I signed.
The attorney instructed me where to send the documents securely.
When it was done, I closed the folder and slipped it back into the suitcase.
Only then did I notice my hand was shaking.
Not from fear.
From the delayed shock of finally doing what I had imagined for months.
I had expected leaving Ryan to feel like an explosion.
It felt more like a door closing softly.
My encrypted phone vibrated again.
This time the caller identification showed Ryan.
He should not have had that number.
I stared at it until the call ended.
Then it rang again.
And again.
On the fourth attempt, I answered.
“Where are you?” Ryan demanded.
No hello.
No apology.
No question about what I had seen.
Just control.
“Somewhere you don’t need to know.”
“Do you understand what you’ve done?”
Behind his voice I could hear movement, a door shutting, someone speaking in the distance.
“I forwarded a photograph Chloe sent me.”
“To my Board.”
“Yes.”
“You could have called me first.”
That nearly made me laugh.
“So you could explain why your executive assistant was wearing your shirt in your hotel bed?”
Silence.
Then Ryan lowered his voice.
“You don’t understand the situation.”
For years, those words had worked on me.
You don’t understand the pressure.
You don’t understand the business.
You don’t understand why I have to travel.
You don’t understand what leadership requires.
Ryan’s favorite defense was always my supposed inability to understand the thing happening directly in front of me.
“Then explain it,” I said.
Another silence.
He didn’t.
Instead he said, “The Board is treating this like a corporate issue.”
“Chloe works for the company.
You run the company.
Why are you surprised?”
“Because you made it corporate.”
“No, Ryan.
You did that when you brought your executive assistant into your bed.
Chloe made it visible when she photographed it.
I only changed the audience.”
His breathing sharpened.
“You think this is clever?”
