Chapter 2 — My Daughter Called at Midnight—Then Her Mother-in-Law Said She Wasn’t Leaving

Exactly what I told you.”

Emily looked down.

That movement told me more than any explanation could have.

I had watched my daughter argue with teachers, negotiate the price of her first used car, defend a college roommate nobody else liked, and stand in front of two hundred wedding guests without missing a word of her vows.

Emily was not frightened of speaking.

But in that house, she was measuring every sentence before letting it leave her mouth.

I took one step toward the staircase.

“Come down, sweetheart.”

Daniel shifted sideways, blocking part of the landing.

“Wait.”

I stopped.

“Move away from the stairs, Daniel.”

“Sir, you don’t understand what happened.”

“Then explain it after she comes down.”

He looked at Emily.

“Tell him.”

She didn’t answer.

“Emily,” he repeated, more firmly.

“Tell him what actually happened.”

Her fingers tightened around the bag.

Margaret folded her arms.

“She overreacted to a private disagreement,” she said.

“Daniel tried to stop her from driving when she was upset.

That’s it.”

I looked at the red mark on Emily’s wrist.

“How did that happen?”

Nobody answered.

Daniel’s jaw moved.

Finally Emily whispered, “He grabbed me.”

The room went completely still.

Daniel threw up his hands.

“Because you were trying to leave in the middle of the night!”

There it was.

Not denial.

Justification.

Margaret spun toward him.

“Daniel.”

Too late.

I glanced toward my phone.

Daniel followed my eyes.

His face lost another shade of color.

Emily took one step down.

Daniel reached toward her bag.

I said his name once.

“Daniel.”

He stopped.

My voice surprised even me.

It wasn’t loud.

There was no threat in it.

But he understood.

Emily descended another step.

Then another.

Margaret moved to the bottom of the staircase.

“Emily, think carefully,” she said.

“Walking out tonight will make everything worse.”

Emily stopped halfway down.
