Chapter 4 — My Daughter Called at Midnight—Then Her Mother-in-Law Said She Wasn’t Leaving

4.9Editorial score

Behind us, Daniel said, “Mom, stop.”

But Margaret had spent too long controlling the room to surrender it quietly.

“She embarrassed him.

She accused him of frightening her.

She threatened to leave because he took her keys away for her own good.”

Emily’s face tightened.

I turned to her.

“He took your keys?”

She nodded.

Daniel stepped forward.

“She was upset.”

“So you took her keys.”

“I didn’t want her driving.”

“Did she ask you to give them back?”

He hesitated.

Margaret answered for him.

“That is irrelevant.”

Emily spoke before I could.

“I wasn’t trying to drive.”

Daniel looked at her.

She swallowed.

“I told you I was going to call a rideshare.

You still wouldn’t give me my keys because the house key was on the ring.”

Daniel said nothing.

The explanation landed slowly.

This had never been about preventing her from driving while emotional.

Taking the car keys had also taken away her key to the house they were renovating and the small key to the lockbox where she kept personal papers.

More importantly, it had told her she could leave only if Daniel permitted it.

Margaret had apparently agreed.

That was why Emily had gone upstairs with her phone, closed herself into the bedroom, and called me in a whisper.

“What happened after you called?” I asked.

Emily glanced toward Daniel.

“He heard me.”

Daniel immediately said, “I heard her talking.

I didn’t know who she called.”

Emily shook her head.

“You asked if I called my dad.”

Silence.

Margaret looked toward the phone in my hand again.

I unlocked it.

“I’m calling the police.”

Daniel stepped back.

Margaret’s eyes widened.

“That is completely unnecessary.”

“Then it should be a very short conversation.”

Emily grabbed my sleeve.

For a second I thought she wanted me to stop.

Instead she whispered, “Please call.”

So I did.

I explained there was no immediate medical emergency, but my adult daughter had asked to leave a residence, said her keys had been withheld, and had a visible mark on her wrist after saying her husband grabbed her.

The dispatcher told us to remain separated if possible and said officers were being sent.

Margaret stared at Emily as if she had committed some unforgivable betrayal.

“You’re really doing this to Daniel?”

Emily’s shoulders folded inward.

I stepped beside her, not in front of her.

Daniel rubbed both hands over his face.
