I wanted distance between my office and the investigation.
I wanted every decision documented.
Most of all, I wanted Richard to have no credible way to claim later that I had used my position to destroy him.
“You called the authorities?” he asked.
“I called people whose job is to make sure neither you nor I get to control what happens next.”
That unsettled him more than a threat would have.
Richard understood influence.
He understood favors.
He understood private conversations behind closed doors.
A documented process was something else.
Max looked from his father to me.
“Dad?”
Richard ignored him.
“This is a school matter.”
“It started as one,” I said.
The principal cleared his throat.
“There is hallway footage.”
Richard turned toward him so fast the chair creaked.
“You told me the camera near that corridor wasn’t reliable.”
The principal froze.
I said nothing.
Richard realized what he had just revealed.
The principal slowly removed his glasses.
“I told you,” he said, choosing each word carefully, “that I had not yet reviewed the footage.”
Richard’s mouth opened.
Then closed.
Max began tapping one foot against the floor.
I looked at the principal.
“Please preserve the original recording.
Don’t send it to me.
Don’t show it to me privately.
Give it directly to the district investigator when they arrive.”
He nodded.
Richard stood.
“This is ridiculous.
Max already said he was involved.
Children argue.
Maybe he pushed her.
Maybe she pushed him first.
You don’t know.”
“That is precisely why the recording matters.”
Richard pointed at me.
“You walked in here wearing that title like a weapon.”
“No.
I showed you my identification after you told me that everyone important in town knew who you were and implied evidence could be ‘handled.’ There is a difference.”
The principal looked down again.
Richard heard the distinction too.
His face reddened.
“You always did love technicalities.”
“In my profession, we call them facts.”
The office door opened.
A district safeguarding officer entered with a school security supervisor.
Behind them was a representative from the district administration.
Their arrival changed the room immediately.
Richard was no longer speaking to people who depended directly on his generosity.
The safeguarding officer introduced herself and asked that everyone remain available while the school secured the relevant records and contacted the appropriate authorities.
