Chapter 6 — My Groom Called Me “The Next One” Before Our Wedding Vows

4.9Editorial score

My family’s transfer never left the bank.

Our accounts were separated.

The fraudulent agreements were challenged and voided.

The marriage license remained unsigned.

Legally, I had never become Luke’s wife.

Emotionally, I still had to grieve him.

That was harder to explain to people who wanted the story to end when the handcuffs appeared.

They called me lucky.

They called me brave.

They said I had escaped.

All of that was true.

But I also lost the man I thought existed, the future I had planned, and my confidence in my own judgment.

For months, every kind gesture felt rehearsed.

Every forgotten detail seemed suspicious.

I replayed our relationship, searching for the exact moment I should have known.

One of the previous women eventually called me.

She did not thank me or offer advice.

She simply said, “He made you trust him.

That was his skill, not your failure.”

I wrote the sentence down.

A year after the wedding that never happened, Lakeside Manor returned the personal items left behind in storage.

Inside the box were my veil, a pair of earrings, the ribbon from my bouquet, and the phone I had gone back to retrieve.

The battery was dead.

I held it for a long time, thinking about the tiny mistake that had changed everything.

Had I remembered it, I would have walked directly to the altar.

I would have said the vows.

My father would have sent the money.

By morning, Luke might have been gone.

Instead, I forgot my phone.

I heard his real voice.

And when the moment came to choose between the beautiful story he had built and the terrible truth standing behind it, I trusted what I knew.

I did not leave my dignity at the altar with the flowers.

I carried it out myself.
