Nothing by itself was dramatic.
Together, it formed a pattern.
That was my professional instinct taking over.
In construction operations, one delayed shipment can be an accident.
Six delays from the same supplier are a system.
One lie can be panic.
Six months of coordinated lies are a structure.
And structures reveal where the weight is being carried.
Jason had built his entire double life on one assumption: that I would keep accepting isolated explanations instead of comparing them.
When I arrived at our apartment, he was waiting.
So was Madison.
That surprised me.
They were sitting separately in the living room, but their presence together told me they had already coordinated what they planned to say.
Jason stood as soon as I entered.
“We need to clear this up.”
I looked at Madison.
“Why is she in my home?”
Madison stood too.
“I thought you deserved to hear the truth from both of us.”
For the first time since the plane, I felt genuine anger rise hot in my chest.
Not because she was there.
Because of the phrase she had chosen.
The truth.
They had lied until I caught them, and now they wanted credit for honesty.
I placed my bag beside the door.
“Fine,” I said.
“Tell me.”
Jason exhaled as though we were beginning a difficult business meeting.
“Madison and I developed feelings.”
“When?”
He glanced at her.
“A few months ago.”
“Before or after you told me she was nothing and I was insecure?”
“Emily—”
“Before or after?”
He rubbed his forehead.
“Things between us haven’t been good for a while.”
“That’s not an answer.”
Madison stepped in.
“He told me you two were basically separated emotionally.”
I looked at Jason.
He looked at the floor.
There it was.
The first crack between them.
“Did he?” I asked.
Madison’s confidence weakened.
“Yes.”
“Interesting.
Because during those same months, he was sending me vacation options and talking about renewing our lease.”
Jason’s head snapped up.
“That’s private.”
I stared at him.
“You brought your affair partner into our living room and now you’re concerned about privacy?”
Madison’s face changed.
She turned toward him.
“You said you were planning to leave.”
