Chapter 3 — My Mother Mocked My Uniform—Then Four Hundred Warriors Stood Behind Me

“The incident was recorded,” he said.

Derek’s head snapped toward him.

“Recorded?”

“The ballroom has security coverage.”

Derek’s face changed.

Until that moment, he’d been relying on the oldest protection our family had ever offered him: Patricia’s version of events.

When we were children, if Derek broke something, I had provoked him.

If Derek mocked me, I was too sensitive.

If he was cruel, he was joking.

If I objected, I was causing trouble.

But a camera didn’t have a favorite child.

It didn’t care who Patricia loved more.

It didn’t care about Derek’s excuses.

It had seen his hand rise.

It had seen it cross my face.

Security reached him.

One of the officers spoke quietly and instructed him to come with them.

Derek looked at my mother.

“Mom.”

I hadn’t heard that tone from him in decades.

It was the voice of a boy who had always expected someone else to erase the consequences.

Patricia stepped forward.

“Nobody is taking my son anywhere.”

The Master Chief moved between them.

Not aggressively.

He didn’t need to.

“Ma’am, step back.”

Her eyes widened.

People did not tell Patricia Barker to step back.

At least not in the world she had built for herself.

“Do you know who our family is?”

The question hung in the air.

For twenty-five years, those words had been one of her weapons.

Our family.

Our name.

Our reputation.

As if belonging to the Barkers were a rank nobody else could earn.

I looked at her.

“You told me I wasn’t part of it.”

She froze.

I hadn’t raised my voice.

I didn’t need to remind her of the trash bag.

She remembered.

So did I.

November cold.

My father’s hand reaching toward me.

Derek smiling by the fireplace.

Vanessa staring at her phone.

The porch light going dark behind me.

Patricia swallowed.

“You were eighteen.

You were being rebellious.”

“I enlisted.”

“Against my wishes.”

“Yes.”

“You humiliated me.”
