That frightened me more than anything.
I reached for my phone.
The drawer was open less than an inch.
Esteban had not managed to take it because Lucía had stopped his hand.
I unlocked it myself.
Nothing looked unusual at first.
That was the point.
Lucía sat beside me.
“Look at deleted messages.”
Esteban moved toward us.
Tomás caught his shoulder.
“Stay there.”
I opened the deleted folder.
There were bank alerts I had never seen.
Password reset notices.
Security codes.
Messages confirming transfers between accounts.
Not one enormous transfer that would have frightened me immediately.
Dozens of smaller ones.
Amounts designed to disappear inside groceries, bills, household expenses and the ordinary noise of married life.
My mouth went dry.
I began scrolling.
Two months.
Four months.
Seven months.
Some messages had been deleted within minutes of arriving.
I looked at Esteban.
“How long?”
He stared at the floor.
“How long have you been doing this?”
“They were household expenses.”
“You deleted the alerts.”
“Because you panic about money.”
Tomás made a sound of disbelief.
Esteban immediately pointed at him.
“This has nothing to do with you.”
“It became my business when my wife started sleeping in your bed because she was afraid of what you were doing.”
Esteban turned on Lucía.
“And you.
Do you realize how sick this looks? Climbing between a married couple every night?”
There it was again.
Humiliation as a weapon.
He could not explain the messages, so he attacked the person who had caught him.
Lucía’s face flushed, but she did not move.
“You counted on that,” she said.
Esteban went still.
“You counted on her being embarrassed enough not to ask why I was here.”
Silence.
“And you counted on me being too embarrassed to tell her what I saw.”
For the first time, I understood why Lucía had invented the story about bad dreams.
Why she had lowered her eyes when I questioned her.
Why she had said she felt protected in the middle.
She had been protecting herself too.
She had seen something in a new family home that she did not know how to accuse without risking her marriage, her place in the house and my trust all at once.
“What happened after the first night?” I asked.
Lucía looked at Esteban before answering.
