I frowned.

“For what?”

“For not telling you sooner.”

I sat across from her.

“You tried to tell me in the only way you thought you could.”

Her eyes filled.

“I thought you hated me.”

“I almost did.”

She laughed once through the tears.

“So did I.”

Then we both started laughing—not because anything was funny, but because seventeen nights of fear, embarrassment and misunderstanding finally had somewhere to go.

I reached across the table and took her hand.

The same hand that had clamped around mine beneath the blanket.

The same silent warning I had initially mistaken for terror.

It had been courage.

Lucía had entered our house as the person with the least power.

She was the new wife.

The outsider.

The easiest person to dismiss as strange, dramatic or confused.

Esteban understood that before any of us did.

What he failed to understand was that being underestimated can give someone a kind of freedom.

Nobody watched Lucía closely because nobody believed she mattered.

So she watched everything.

She noticed the phone.

The deleted alerts.

The late-night movements.

The way Esteban watched to see whether I was asleep.

And when she could not safely accuse him, she turned herself into an obstacle he had to cross.

Night after night, she carried a pillow into my room and placed herself exactly where he least wanted her.

Between his secret and the woman he was keeping it from.

Months later, I still occasionally woke expecting to feel someone beside me.

Sometimes I remembered the soft brush of Lucía’s blanket against the stairs and felt ashamed of how much I had resented that sound.

Now it meant something entirely different.

It was not the sound of another woman invading my marriage.

It was the sound of someone refusing to leave me alone inside a danger I could not yet see.

On the seventeenth night, I thought Lucía was frightened because something was outside our bedroom door.

I was wrong.

She had known from the beginning that the real danger was already inside.

And every night she slept between us, she made sure I did not have to face it alone.
