Chapter 4 — The Groom Thought Fear Would Make Her Say I Do

‘You were measuring how to trap her.’

That was when the prosecutor opened her leather case.

‘Mr.

Vale, the issue is not only Miss Mara’s statement,’ she said.

‘Last night we received additional documentation tying three lender entities to your private holding structure.

We also received a written threat linking a marital decision to immediate debt acceleration.

Those records correspond to an existing federal investigation into wire fraud, hidden beneficial ownership, and coercive lending practices connected to your companies.’

Victor’s lawyers stood together.

One said, ‘My client will not answer questions without counsel.’

‘He does not have to,’ the prosecutor said.

‘We are serving a federal search warrant and asset preservation order.

Agents are executing related warrants at Vale Capital and two affiliated offices now.’

The chapel erupted.

Victor’s champagne glass slipped from his fingers and shattered beside the flowers.

It was the first ugly sound he had made without meaning to.

Elian stared at his father.

‘You said this was handled.’

Victor turned on him with a look so sharp it showed everyone the truth of their family.

‘Shut up.’

Mara did not look away.

The prosecutor continued, ‘The order also blocks immediate acceleration or transfer of the loans tied to Mara’s parents’ company pending judicial review.

No one here loses a business today because a bride refuses to be threatened.’

My father’s knees weakened.

He gripped the pew.

I had not saved the company with magic.

The debts were still real.

The contracts would still need lawyers, court dates, audits, and ugly months of repair.

But Victor’s hand had been taken off the trigger.

That was enough for that morning.

Victor tried one last time.

He walked toward my parents, lowering his voice as if proximity could restore control.

‘Think carefully.

Orders can be fought.

Banks get nervous.

Vendors talk.

Families like yours cannot survive scandal.’

I closed the folder.

‘You are on a live record in front of federal agents,’ I said.

He stopped.

The prosecutor looked at him with almost gentle patience.

‘Mr.

Vale, that sounded like another threat.’

His lawyer touched his sleeve.

‘Victor.’

Victor pulled free.

‘This family was nothing before my son looked at her.’

Mara stepped forward.

Her voice shook on the first word.

It steadied on the second.

‘I was not chosen by your son.

I was targeted by him.’

Elian’s face twisted.

‘You loved me yesterday.’

‘I was afraid yesterday.’

He laughed under his breath.

‘Same thing with you.’
