Maya removed a sealed envelope from the folder.
Dad’s handwriting covered the front.
For Ava.
My chest tightened.
The envelope had been stored with the attorney who prepared the deed.
Maya had retrieved it after confirming my identity, but I had not opened it.
I had been afraid that reading Dad’s final explanation would feel like losing him again.
Mom recognized his handwriting immediately.
“What is that?”
“A letter addressed to Ava,” Maya said.
“I should see it.”
“No,” I said.
Mom stared at me.
“I was his wife.”
“And it was addressed to me.”
I took the envelope from Maya.
The paper felt heavier than it should have.
Mark stepped toward the porch.
“This is ridiculous.
We’re already here.
We moved half our things inside.
Let us stay for a few days while the lawyers sort it out.”
“No,” I said.
His eyebrows rose.
He had expected me to bend because I had always bent before.
He pointed at the house.
“There are children involved.”
“You brought them to a house you did not own.”
“Because your mother invited us.”
“She did not have authority to do that.”
Kendra’s face hardened.
“So you’re punishing my children because Dad liked you more?”
“This isn’t about who he liked more.”
“It has always been about that with you.”
I almost laughed again, but this time there was nothing funny in it.
Dad had attended Kendra’s school plays, coached her softball team, and paid for the wedding she insisted had to be held at a lakeside hotel.
He loved her.
Whatever decision he made about the house had not erased that love.
But love did not change the deed.
And it did not excuse what they had done on the lawn.
Maya handed two envelopes to Deputy Harris.
“One is notice that Kendra and Mark do not have permission to occupy the property,” she explained.
“The other is a formal notice concerning Linda’s tenancy.
Ava is not attempting an unlawful removal.
Linda will receive the legally required period to relocate.”
Mom looked stunned.
“You already prepared an eviction notice for your own mother?”
“I prepared a lawful notice after you threatened to have me physically removed from my own home.”
“I was angry.”
“You brought a truck.”
“That was Kendra’s idea.”
Kendra turned on her.
“You told us Ava had no rights here.”
“You said Mark had checked everything.”
Mark’s face reddened.
“I checked what you gave me.
