Ethan stopped three steps away from me.
The ballroom had gone so quiet that I could hear one of my children breathing beside me.
His eyes kept moving between my face and theirs, as if his mind could not accept what his vision was telling him.
“Emma,” he said again.
This time my name sounded less like recognition and more like a question.
Behind him, Victor Harrison remained standing beside his table.
His hand was wrapped around the back of a chair so tightly that his knuckles had turned white.
Five years earlier, he had watched me sign away my place in his son’s life with the calm confidence of a man closing a business deal.
Now he looked at my children and understood that his deal had never contained the whole truth.
I reached into my purse.
Victor’s voice cut across the room.
“Emma.”
There was a warning in it.
For the first time, I almost smiled.
He still believed warnings worked on me.
I pulled out a slim folder.
Ethan stared at it.
“What is this?”
Before I could answer, the child holding my right hand looked up at him again.
“Are you our daddy?”
Ethan’s face changed.
The shock did not disappear.
It deepened.
He crouched slowly until he was closer to the children’s height.
His eyes moved across four faces that mirrored pieces of his own.
“How old are you?” he asked.
“Five,” one of them answered.
The word hit him harder than anything I could have said.
Ethan stood abruptly.
He looked at me.
Then at Victor.
Then back at me.
“Five?”
I nodded.
The guests around us shifted uneasily.
No one had left.
No one even pretended not to listen.
This was no longer a wedding interruption.
It was a public fracture running through the Harrison family.
Ethan’s voice dropped.
“Were you pregnant when you left?”
“Yes.”
His jaw tightened.
“You knew?”
“Yes.”
He took a step backward as if I had struck him.
For one terrible second, I saw the pain in his expression and remembered the man I had loved before everything collapsed.
Then Victor moved toward us.
“This is not the place,” he said.
I looked at him.
“No.
Your office was the place, wasn’t it?”
Several guests turned toward Victor.
Ethan did too.
“What does that mean?”
Victor’s expression hardened.
