Chapter 2 — He Paid Her to Vanish—Then Four Children Walked Into His Son’s Wedding

4.9Editorial score

“Ethan, we will handle this privately.”

“You paid her.”

It wasn’t a question.

Victor said nothing.

Ethan looked at the folder in my hand.

“How much?”

I could have answered immediately.

Instead, I opened the folder and removed a copy of the agreement Victor had placed in front of me five years earlier.

The paper trembled slightly between my fingers, though my voice did not.

“One hundred and twenty million dollars.”

A wave of whispers passed through the ballroom.

Ethan stared at his father.

“You gave Emma one hundred and twenty million dollars to leave me?”

Victor finally released the chair.

“I protected you.”

“From what?”

Victor glanced toward me.

“From a mistake.”

The cruelty of the word landed exactly as it had five years earlier.

But this time I was not alone in his office.

This time his son heard it.

This time his grandchildren were standing beside me.

Ethan’s face went cold.

“You called her a mistake?”

Victor exhaled slowly, as though Ethan were the unreasonable one.

“You were young.

Emotional.

You were prepared to attach yourself permanently to someone who did not belong in the life you were going to have.”

I watched Ethan absorb each sentence.

Then he looked at me.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

That was the question I had rehearsed answering for five years.

Yet when it finally came, the truth felt heavier than I remembered.

“Because you disappeared too.”

His eyebrows pulled together.

“I disappeared?”

“After I left, you never came.”

“I couldn’t find you.”

“You had my number.”

“I called you.”

I stared at him.

“No, you didn’t.”

His confusion looked genuine.

Victor’s eyes flickered.

It was small.

But I saw it.

So did Ethan.

He turned slowly toward his father.

“What did you do?”

Victor said nothing.

Ethan stepped closer.

“What did you do?”

Victor lowered his voice.

“I made certain a clean break remained clean.”

The words changed the air between us.

I had spent five years believing Ethan had accepted my disappearance without a fight.
