“You asked him to choose between you and his family.”
“I asked him to speak to me without you in the room.”
The guests no longer looked at my dress.
They looked at Eleanor.
Her humiliation had begun with laughter directed at me.
Now every answer she gave tightened the circle around her.
Julian took the laboratory packet from my hands, but only after asking permission with his eyes.
I let him have it.
He examined the seal, the reference number, and the signature page.
Then he found the cover letter.
It stated that the original report had been preserved after a delivery irregularity.
The laboratory had contacted me when the internal review uncovered the redirection request.
They had confirmed the result by telephone, then sent the sealed packet directly to me.
I had refused to open it.
Julian looked up.
“Why?”
“Because your mother had already told everyone I forged documents and invented a pregnancy.
I needed the seal intact.
I needed you to see that no one had touched the report after it left the laboratory.”
“And you kept it for eight months?”
“I kept hoping you would answer one of my letters.”
His face crumpled for a moment.
“I never received them.”
“I believe you.”
Relief appeared in his eyes, but I did not let it stay.
“Someone hid the letters, Julian.
But you knew I was pregnant before the divorce.
You could have called me.
You could have visited the doctor.
You could have asked the laboratory yourself.”
He looked down at Lily.
“I should have.”
“Yes.”
There was no anger in my voice.
That made the truth land harder.
Eleanor saw her son slipping beyond her control.
She reached for the packet again.
“This spectacle has gone far enough.
Give me those papers.
Our legal team will review them privately.”
Julian pulled them away.
“No.”
It was a small word, but it changed the room.
Eleanor stared at him.
“What did you say?”
“I said no.”
“This family does not conduct private matters in front of strangers.”
“You made it public when you humiliated Victoria in front of them.”
“I defended you.”
“You erased my daughter.”
“I protected the Sterling name.”
The sentence escaped before she could stop it.
The courtyard fell silent again.
Julian’s bride slowly removed her engagement ring.
Eleanor noticed.
“Do not be foolish,” she told her.
