Chapter 3 — My Dead Father Led Me to a File With My Husband’s Name

4.9Editorial score

It had been going on long before my father died.

But there was something else in the folder.

A handwritten page in Dad’s familiar blocky handwriting.

I knew every slant of those letters.

Emily,

If Daniel is showing you this, something has happened before I could speak to you myself.

I am sorry for the pain this will cause.

I kept quiet only until I was certain.

Ryan is not merely being unfaithful.

He has been asking questions about property that does not belong to him and money he seems to expect after my death.

Do not confront him until Daniel explains everything.

I pressed the paper to the table.

For a moment I couldn’t see through my tears.

Daniel waited.

My father had known.

He had been carrying the knowledge alone while I sat across from him talking about ordinary things.

I remembered our final month together.

His strange questions.

His repeated reminders to keep copies of my documents somewhere safe.

The afternoon he asked whether Ryan knew the password to my personal email.

I had teased him for being paranoid.

He hadn’t been paranoid.

“What exactly was Ryan planning?” I asked.

Daniel slid another document toward me.

It was a copy of a property search.

“Ryan believed your father’s estate was worth considerably more than Robert ever discussed publicly.”

“Was it?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Enough that your father became concerned after learning Ryan was telling Vanessa he would soon have access to investment property and cash.”

My skin went cold.

“How do you know he told her that?”

Daniel removed a small digital recorder from his pocket.

My father had apparently hired a licensed investigator after discovering the suspicious financial inquiries.

The investigator had documented meetings between Ryan and Vanessa and legally obtained a recording from a conversation held openly in a restaurant patio where they could be overheard.

Daniel pressed play.

Ryan’s voice filled the room.

“When the old man’s gone, Emily gets everything.

She signs whatever I put in front of her.

She never looks at paperwork.”

Vanessa laughed softly.

“And then?”

“Then we stop worrying about money.”

I closed my eyes.

The recording continued.

Vanessa asked, “What about Emily?”

Ryan answered without hesitation.

“She’ll survive.”

Daniel stopped the recording.

I felt strangely calm.

The worst pain had already happened beside my father’s coffin.

This was different.

This was information.

And information could be used.

“Why the cemetery?” I asked.

“Because your father did not trust the house.”
