Chapter 6 — My Dead Father Led Me to a File With My Husband’s Name

4.9Editorial score

“No.

He distrusted you.”

Ryan turned.

Something cold entered his expression.

“He filled your head with that garbage.”

“He’s dead, Ryan.”

The cruelty of my own sentence seemed to surprise even him.

For a second neither of us spoke.

Then his phone buzzed.

He glanced down.

Vanessa.

Her name flashed clearly before he tilted the screen away.

I said nothing.

That afternoon Daniel called both of us and requested our attendance at his office for the estate meeting.

Ryan became almost cheerful.

He put on a navy suit, apologized for being “distracted,” and even brought me coffee.

The performance was extraordinary now that I knew what sat beneath it.

At Daniel’s office, Ryan chose the chair closest to me and placed one hand on my knee as though we were a devoted grieving couple.

I removed his hand.

Daniel opened the will.

My father had left me his house, his savings, and ownership of both rental properties through a trust structured solely for my benefit.

Ryan leaned forward.

Daniel continued.

The trust had been amended one month before Dad’s death.

My husband’s name appeared nowhere as beneficiary, trustee, manager, or authorized agent.

Ryan’s smile vanished.

“What does that mean for a spouse?” he asked.

Daniel looked directly at him.

“It means exactly what it says.”

Ryan shifted in his chair.

“What if Emily wants me involved?”

“That would be Emily’s decision, subject to the trust terms.”

Ryan turned toward me too quickly.

“We’ll handle it together.”

I looked at him.

“No.”

One word.

His face changed.

Daniel closed the will but did not dismiss us.

“There is another matter.”

Ryan’s fingers tightened around the armrest.

Daniel placed the black folder on the desk.

I watched every trace of color leave my husband’s face.

“You found that?” he whispered.

The room went completely still.

Daniel did not answer the question.

Instead, he opened the folder and began laying out the records one by one.

The financial inquiries.

The property searches.

The messages.

The photographs.

Ryan stood.

“This is insane.”

“Sit down,” Daniel said.

“You had me followed?” Ryan snapped at me.

“I didn’t.”
