Grant signed the closing documents but apparently remembered only the room where he had signed them, not the names printed above the lines.
“You told me this house was yours,” Sloane whispered.
Grant did not answer.
Her eyes moved around the dining room—the paintings, the silver, the long table, the flowers she had probably imagined rearranging.
Then she looked down at the wine stain spreading across her white sleeve.
“What exactly belongs to you?” she asked him.
He glared at her.
“Do not turn on me now.”
“I am asking a question.”
“You knew I was married.”
Sloane flinched.
It was a cruel answer, but an honest one.
Grant had finally exposed the arrangement beneath all his promises.
He had not chosen her because he respected her.
He had chosen her because he believed she would admire what he appeared to control.
Now the appearance was collapsing.
He turned back to me.
“You cannot freeze personal accounts without my authorization.”
“I froze privileges connected to the foundation and requested review of transfers involving our joint assets.
The bank approved the restrictions after receiving the evidence.”
“You went behind my back.”
“You moved money behind mine.”
His phone began vibrating on the table.
He looked at the screen, and the remaining color left his face.
The attorney did not need to tell us who was calling.
Grant answered.
He listened for less than ten seconds.
“No,” he said.
“You do not understand.
I am the authorized signatory.”
A pause.
“I am Grant Whitaker.”
Another pause.
His identity, for once, was not enough.
He ended the call without saying goodbye.
The senator leaned back in his chair.
“Has the board been asked to vote?”
The attorney nodded.
“A quorum is present.
The resolution suspending Mr.
Whitaker can be considered immediately.”
Grant laughed, but the sound was thin.
“You invited them here for this.”
“I invited them for the foundation dinner,” I said.
“You invited Sloane for my replacement ceremony.
The timing was your decision.”
The first board member raised his hand.
Then another.
The bishop hesitated longest.
When his hand finally rose, Grant looked away.
The vote was unanimous except for his mother, who abstained.
Grant Whitaker was removed as treasurer before dessert was served.
He was ordered to surrender every foundation device, access token, key, and record in his possession.
An independent forensic review would begin the next morning.
All payments to Mercer Strategic were suspended.
Donors were notified before rumors could replace facts.
